Default O/T A Battle of Britain pilot at my door ......

One summer afternoon when I was about six there was a knock at the door. I answered. Stood in front of me was what I remember as being a tall man (but at 6 everyone looks tall!!) of about 60, smartly dressed and stood very upright.

The gentleman asked if Mr Steed (my family name) was home. I told him that was my father and that he was out at the moment. At which point my mum arrived at the door.

The gentleman went on to explain to my mum that he was looking for a Mr Steed and that he had found our address in the phone book, but that the person he was looking for would be about his age.

It turned out that the man had been a pilot during the Battle of Britian and had been shot down, crashing landing on some land nearby. My grandfather had been working in a neighbouring field (he was a farmer) and had rushed over to the plane and pulled the unconcious pilot out. The man had turned up all these years later to say "thank you" for saving his life.

I'm sure there are plently of similar stories, but I felt like recounting this one.

Yes, he did. My grandather still lived close by at the time and they met up shortly after. In recent years I've discovered a lot more about my grandfather that I never knew, but perhaps that's a story for another day.
