Hawaii has grown since 1982 the first time I went there when I was in the Navy.My dad grew up there in the 1930's my Grandfarther was in the Navy he was on the USS New Mexico and the USS West Virgina then tranfered to the USS Saratoga CV-3 so he missed the attack on Pearl Harbor there was only two Hotel's on the Island back then and all military dependents came by ship only the well to do flew to Hawaii PAN American clipper a flying boat back then.Saw one of the original Hotels there it looks very small with all the new one's all around it.Was a good vacation.

Enjoyed the photos, Mike. The memorial is moving - so many names. Your family's military history is interesting - I would be keen to learn more and see some more photos. Thanks for posting the photos.

    Regards

    Here are a few photo's.

This is a old post card my Dad gave me of one of Grand Dads ships.

Now look what these guys did for a photo.

Here is my Grandfarther when he was a Cheif Petty Officer. He became later what was called a mustang were a inlisted become's a officer.

Here is a crazy photo when you go over the equator you would have go through a initiation were you are a wog and then you become a shell back I did it one's and would never want to do it again I think they got it worse in the 1930's my Dad gave me Grand Dads book of when his ship went over the line as we use to call it in the Navy.I think even the British Navy proberly did the same thing. The US Navy does not allow this any more.

    Awesome pics Mike.

I remember visiting the USS Missouri & New Jersey many years back in Sydney... Geez, I was still at school then. Think it was somewhere around 1988. It was Australia's Bicentennial year. Queued inline for hours to get onboard but it was worth the wait. Was a memorable experience.

Couple of years before the visit, I had built a Tamiya model of the Missouri, was overjoyed when I heard it was headed Downunder.

Those long timber decks looked alot fresher then. Shame it isn't possible to keep them in that state. Casting your eyes down the deck, they seem to stretch all the way to the horizon.

Standing next to the main guns and those shells, 16 inch I think... correct? You're standing next to one in your pic... Really was tremendous stuff.

Thanks again Mike for sharing, brought back wonderful memories.

Fantastic photos. I've always been fascinated with the "between the wars" pacific USN, a world long gone. Anymore of your grandfather's photos you care to post would be much appreciated by me at least.

I just saw the photos, Mike. Very interesting - thanks for posting them.

Is it my imagination or is there a platform on top of the guns on the foredeck of the ship in the postcard above? (I recall that in the early days the Royal Navy built such a platform to launch aircraft).

    Regards

    Jon'.
