    Default Flying Legends Duxford 2009

Flying Legends is organised by Stephen Grey's Fighter Collection, which should need no introduction on this forum.

The event is outstanding, knocking any and every motorsport event into a cocked hat if you are spectating - next year is a must for an ATG trip - for little more than the standard entry ticket you can have the best seat in the house in a VIP enclosure, excellent food, a bar (serving Spitfire of course), plus parking a stone's throw away.

A few Bremont banners were in hospitality and an ad' was on the back of the programme. Giles gave a short interview, talking about the MB and EP 120, although as far as I know, the only two in sight were mine and Stephen Grey's. Bizarre - why not capitalise on this wonderful watch in its most appropriate environment?

Mikael flew the Bleriot beautifully - hopefully someone from ATG will be there at Dover later this month take some photos?

We shared a table at lunch with two ex-RAF fast jet pilots (Javelins and Canberras etc) who were very interested in the EP and MB. They saw my Bremont shirt and made a b-line for us! Both were also interested in Historic racing, in particular the Goodwood Revival and drove E-types so we had a lot in common.

The aircraft were stunning - favourites for me were the Me 108 and Yak 9s, which are on my list. Star of the show had to be the two - yes two! - Focke Wulf 190s - I never thought I would ever see one. One was static but the other flew - it had phenomenal presence and sounded like a pod racer from Star Wars with a deep bass thump from its radial.

Sadly, all the Fighter Collection aircraft were grounded by the CAA who are inspecting paperwork back to 1945!? This included EP 120.

2009 or 1943? The re-enactors added an eerie atmosphere to the early morning...

Fabulous Yaks, spot the Antonov in the background...

This one is a two seater...

    This was the static Focke...

    This was the flying Focke...

I don't care what Al' says, I like biplanes and they like me - besides, I wasn't in the last one which was written off, in fact no-one was, it took off on its own! These were lovely old things - I have flown in the Rapide down at Shoreham.

De Havilland Dominie, the military version of the Rapide.

    One for the IWC owners...

Sadly Sally B was also grounded. After spending all last year raising funding and replacing all four engines, one recently went u/s but she will be back in the air soon.

Spot the flaming exhaust on this Spitfire...

These Skyraiders had a long service life and were dusted of for Korea - love the hornet tails...

Lastly, here's a couple of Bristol Mercury radials for Mat, the first in a Gladiator, the second in a Lysander...

Emboss the date in your diaries for next year!

    Best regards

    Jon'.

Fantastic stuff. Sorry I missed it. As you say, we'll have to go next year. Those Yaks are very cool indeed.

Love the DeH Dragon Rapide. One of my fave 30s commercial craft. And thanks for the radials. I'm not completely obsessed with them, but thanks for taking the time!

    Very cool Jonathan...

Looks like a day right up my street...the Yaks, Spitfires, Fockers and the DeHavilands are wonderful. Now that Bi plane is what I can a plane.... it's the egg box ones that frighten me.....Lol!

Yes we must get to see those ones together....another 'Day out' I reckon... ?

    Love all those aircraft Jon....
It's so good to see that there is a number of shows and people keeping all these planes going.

The Vulcan has flown over my way a couple of times recently. Presumably going to a air show.
